Could the old adage, “look good, feel good” hold true today? Perhaps so. A recent study published in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ medical journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, assessed the quality of life of over 600 women both before and after an elective breast augmentation. The findings were definitive, satisfaction was higher post operation.
‘Understanding the Effect of Breast Augmentation of Quality of Life’
The study set out to evaluate and quantify a women’s quality of life both before and after augmentation. Averaging 33.5 years old, 611 female patients took part in the study. Of these, the mean implant size was 350cc—73% of the women opting for silicone-filled implants. To accurately measure results, researchers used BREAST-Q, a highly reliable questionnaire and metrics tools. Each woman completed the BREAST-Q questionnaire three times: once prior to their augmentation and twice after: six weeks and six months post operation.
Researchers found post-surgery, the women saw significant improvement in:
• Satisfaction with their breasts
• Psychological well being
• Sexual well being
Satisfaction with their breasts nearly tripled. However, when questioned on their physical satisfaction, many women reported a lower postoperative score than they had preoperative. Researchers also found that older participants had lower satisfaction rates than their younger counterparts. Furthermore, as women aged, their overall surgical experience was significantly lower. When taking into account all study factors, researchers concluded that, “breast augmentation is associated with high patient satisfaction and significant improvements in quality of life”
