If you’re living with overly large and heavy breasts, you may experience a variety of physical problems such as neck, shoulder and back pain, skin rashes and extreme shoulder grooving from bra straps. In addition, you might also experience both the emotional pain and social anxiety caused by your condition. Breast reduction surgery is performed to alleviate these symptoms by removing excess fat, glandular tissue and skin for smaller, firmer breasts. Depending on the amount of tissue removed, this procedure is often covered by insurance. Dr. Kent will go over all of these particulars with you during your consultation as well as review photographs of previous patients.
Reasons for Considering Breast Reduction:
- Neck, shoulder and back pain caused by heavy breasts
- Breasts that are simply too large for your frame
- Restriction of physical activity due to the size of your breasts
- Painful shoulder grooving and skin rashes associated with large breasts
Dr. Kent uses a number of different techniques for this procedure, but the most common incision follows the contour of the nipple, drops down the middle of the breast and follows under the curve to form an upside down T. Fat, glandular tissue and excess skin are removed. The nipple is elevated to a higher, more natural position for the smaller breast. The skin is closed mainly with internal sutures to avoid stitch marks. Two drains are placed, one on each side, and they will be removed after 2-3 days.
When covered by insurance, breast reduction surgery is usually performed in the hospital with a one-night stay. Otherwise, it is performed as an outpatient procedure at a surgery center under general anesthesia. After your surgery, Tulsa plastic surgeon Dr. Kent will wrap your chest in Ace bandages. It is recommended that you sleep with your chest elevated to reduce bleeding and swelling, and oral pain medication will be given to control any discomfort. A soft cup support bra will need to be worn for several weeks after your surgery. Most patients typically return to driving in 4-5 days, although it can take up to 2-3 months for your new breasts to attain their final appearance.
